Anderton marks retirement with Bournemouth winner
December 7, 2008Former England midfielder Darren Anderton came off the bench Saturday to score a late winner for Bournemouth in his 569th and final club match before retiring.
Bournemouth beat Chester 1-0 in League Two, the fourth tier of English football.
The 36-year-old Anderton started his career at Portsmouth in 1990 and moved two years later to Tottenham, where he spent 12 years and earned the nickname “Sicknote” due to his numerous injuries.
“Before it gets to the stage where I don’t enjoy it any more, I want to call it a day,” Anderton said. “I was finding training hard work and rather than just slogging on and not enjoying it, I have decided to make this decision.”
He scored seven goals in 30 games for England from 1994 and 2001, and played in the 1996 European Championship in England.
