Can a golf car tow a car if so what kind of car

August 11, 2011

My buddy and I have a bet to see who’s right

  • Maybe a Mini-Cooper, on level ground, for a short distance.
  • Golf car???? Do you mean a golf cart???? If so, No!
  • Yes, but most people wouldn’t think so. You need a really light car, preferably something really close to 2000 pounds. Now I’m not a golf cart expert, but if has a hitch, use it. Otherwise use a 5000 lb strap or chain to pull the car with. Start on level ground where the car wouldn’t roll, (asphalt would be the best surface) and put the car in neutral. Since a typical golf cart has 3-4 hp with a full charge, it should be able to pull the car for a significant distance, but not for long.
  • Some golf carts have a CVT transmission. Using one as a tow vehicle would likely burn out the CVT belt in very short order.

    NOT RECOMMENDED.

Others use a hydrostatic transmission and these are very light duty units.

    NOT RECOMMENDED
